Protea cynaroides - king protea

Coloured pencil & graphite on cotton rag
59 cm H x 56 cm W

The national flower of South Africa, the King Protea certainly is a giant amongst members of the family Proteaceae spread across the southern hemisphere. As well as a striking flower head, this specimen has a dramatic arrangement of leaves sweeping up the stem. It is rendered here at 1.25 times life size in graphite and coloured pencil.
